November Thoughts Week 2

Nov 10 Being grateful for humor - share a story about a time in career where humor played a part.

My small children make me laugh daily.  Sometimes I wonder if I am going to get calls from parents based upon what I hear from the children.  An example of what I am talking about happened on Thursday of this past week.  We were playing a game using soccer skills to knock down bowling pins in Kindergarten.  There were some children who were "pin tenders".  Their job was to move around the gym and pick up all the pins that had been knocked over.  One of my little girls came over to me all upset.  She told me that a little boy who was not a "pin tender" picked up a pin.  Then she very adamantly told me he should  not have done that because she was the "bar tender".  I had to chuckle.

A few years ago I had a little boy who was on the autism spectrum.  He had some significant sensory issues as is not unusual for kids on the spectrum.  He used the restroom and when he was done he came out and told me there was a problem in the bathroom.  He said to me "Ms. Porter, your urinal is too loud.  You need to turn it down."  I had to share this with the custodial staff simply because it was too funny.

Nov 11 What is the most important ‘lesson’ you want to teach your students?

I want to teach my students to learn to love to move.  I don't care if they every become world class athletes.  I want them to learn to love to move and understand that being active helps to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Nov 12 Share a photo - or photos - of things / people you are grateful for.

These are pictures of my cats, family and some friends.  These things keep me going day after day.

Nov 13 What do you do to take time out for yourself?

I love to play ice hockey.  I am a goalie and I love the game and my team.  Currently I am dealing with an injured knee and that is slowing me down which I am struggling with.  I also play golf during the summer.  In addition I love to dragon boat. I am a trivia junkie so if there is trivia happening somewhere and I am able I will take part.  Time with friends is a must.

Nov 14 5 things you are grateful to have learned in your teaching career.

1.  It is okay to tell a student that you are not sure of the answer but you will find out and get back to them.

2.  There is no excuse for not being prepared.  Planning is essential for a good day and helping students learn.  Better to be over planned than under.

3.  Plan for the unexpected.  If you can think of all of the possibilities you are better prepared if something does arise.

4.  Remember to laugh and enjoy the little things.  Sometimes the little things will help get you through the day.

5.  I have learned to take time for myself.  If I don't do that I get overly stressed and then things are not good for me or my students at school.  This is not always easy to do as things get crazy busy.  It is when things get the most crazy that I have to hold onto this and remember a few minutes for me will help make everything seem more manageable.

Nov 15 What tech tools are you most grateful for? Why? How have they changed what you do?

I use Google Docs on a regular basis.  I also use YouTube to find dances and other things that my students can participate in.  Webinars and Go To Meeting have helped to cut down on the number of meetings I have had to travel too.  Pintrest is a great area to find new ideas.  The World Wide Web has helped me to find new programs and activities to use with my students as well.

Nov 16 What is the most powerful aspect of being a connected educator? What are you grateful for?

I love that I can network with other educators through the use of technology. I have learned some wonderful new activities to do with my students.  I am also able to share what I do and that helps me validate that I am offering my students a quality program.
